Lebanese singer Wadih Safi died Friday at the age of 92


Lebanese legend Wadih El Safi passed away this friday at the age of 92.

Wadih el Safi is a cultural icon in the Arab World, especially in Lebanon. He was a songwriter, an actor often called “The voice of Lebanon”.

He became nationally known when, at seventeen, he won a vocal competition sponsored by the Lebanese Broadcasting Network. El Safi began composing and performing songs that drew upon his rural upbringing and love of traditional melodies, blended with an urban sound, and creating a new style of modernized Lebanese folk music.

He has written over 3 000 songs, and performed with many famous musicians, like Najwa Karam or Fairuz.

He died because of a cerebrovascular accident in the Bellevue Hospital in Mansourieh (Lebanon).
